The Chinese Language Centre (CLC) - Chinese Help Desk (CHD) provides UGC-funded students (undergraduate, research postgraduate (full-time MPhil/PhD) and government-funded taught masters) with a variety of services to help them develop their Chinese (Cantonese/Mandarin) language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The CHD is a valuable opportunity for both local and international students to reinforce what they have learned in Chinese language courses, and to communicate with the teachers on various topics to improve their Chinese proficiency in the various skill areas.

  - Putonghua Enhancement (for local students)
  - [Elementary level]/[Intermediate level]/[Advanced level] Mandarin as a foreign language (for international students)

  - Cantonese for Mandarin Speaking Learners

Workshops Details

General Information

The advisor/peer-consultant will send the survey link/QR code after the confirmation email is sent to you and please refer to the confirmation email or our Online Booking System for the venue of consultation
Students may book at most THREE sessions (1:1 consultation/group consultation) per week
Each consultation lasts for about 30 minutes (25 mins consultation + 5 mins online survey)
All consultations will be provided in face-to-face mode only. Online mode (e.g ZOOM) will not be provided
The Chinese Help Desk is operated by the University Grants Committee (UGC) funds, therefore CHD is available for students of HKU’s UGC-funded programmes ONLY (undergraduate, research postgraduate (full-time MPhil/PhD) and government-funded taught masters)
If you are a student of a self-financed Taught Postgraduate Programmes (taught master's degree programmes), CHD is not able to serve you and your booking WILL be canceled/your consultation session will be terminated even if you and your advisor/peer-consultant have been present in the venue.
- The following programmes are offered on a UGC-funded basis: MArch, LLM(Human Rights), MRes(Med) (FT), MSc(Audiology) (FT), MSc(UrbanPlanning); MSocSc(Clinical Psychology) (FT), MSocSc(Educational Psychology) (FT), PGDE, PCLL, MLA (FT), MDS
- All other programmes not listed above are offered on a self-funded basis

Points to Note

You must use your OWN University ID to book the CHD 1:1 service. You will be asked to show your HKU ID card when you attend consultations. No consultation will be delivered if the HKU ID of attendee and booker do not match.
No feedback will be given to students who fail to attend their booked consultation.
You must make your reservation at least one working day (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) before the consultation.
Please send documents you would like to discuss during the consultation, if any, to the consultation teacher at least one working day (Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays) prior to your scheduled consultation.
Please be reminded to select the appropriate advisor or peer-consultant. Our advisor and peer-consultant are exclusive for tutoring in either Cantonese or Putonghua

Cancelling Consultation

If you wish to cancel your consultation, please do so at least 24 hours in advance, by either
- click on the appointment link in your booking confirmation email, OR
- inform the consultation teacher and Chinese Language Centre (clcchd@hku.hk) by email.

Absence

If you fail to cancel the timeslot at least 24 hours before your consultation and you do not attend the consultation, then you will be recorded as absent.
Warning will be given to student who fail to attend the booked consultation. If the student is absent for the second time without a valid and documented reason (e.g., illness), he/she will not be able to book more consultations, and any future sessions you have already booked WILL be cancelled.
