Application Procedure (for students who have successfully completed any of the CHIN9501-08 courses)
I. If you have successfully completed any of the CHIN9501-9508 courses at HKU, your application will be accepted if you complete the following application procedure:
(i) Register through the SIS as early as possible; (late applications will have lower enrollment priority);
(ii) Labor and classroom sessions will be used to conduct the Placement Test on September 1st and 2nd for students who have not previously enrolled in any Mandarin language courses at HKU. Therefore, all Mandarin classes scheduled on these dates are cancelled. If you wish to obtain approval, attendance on September 4th or 5th is mandatory. You must: (a) attend your registered class on one of these dates; and (b) submit a hard copy of the "Statement of Current Level of Proficiency" form to your class teacher during class.
(iii) After completing steps (i) and (ii), you will receive confirmation of your application approval following class on September 4th or 5th. Until this final step, your status will remain “pending”. (**If you will be outside Hong Kong on September 4th or 5th and are unable to attend class, please contact the instructor of the class you registered for online and submit the supporting documents via email before August 31st. Otherwise, your application will not be considered.)
Application Procedure (for NEW registrants)
II. If you are a NEW registrant (i.e., a full-time UG and exchange student who hasn't previously taken any of the CHIN9501-9508 courses at HKU) and wish to apply for CHIN9501-07 in the first semester:
(i) Register through the SIS as early as possible; (late applications will have lower enrollment priority);
(ii) Attend the Written Test and Oral Test in person at the assigned times*.
* All new registrants who have registered through SIS will be informed of the venues and times for the Written Test and Oral Test via HKU email and Moodle after the course registration period. Please check your HKU portal and Moodle regularly. Three sessions of the placement test will be held on August 29th, September 1st, and 2nd. Labor and classroom sessions will be used to conduct the Placement Test, and all Mandarin classes scheduled on September 1st and 2nd are cancelled.
(iii) After taking the written and oral tests in person at the assigned times:
📩 If the course is suitable for you, we will send you a message via HKU Portal or Moodle email. However, if you wish to obtain approval, attendance on September 4th or 5th is mandatory. You must attend your registered class on one of these dates. Until this final step, your status will remain “pending.”
OR,
📩 If the course you have registered for is not appropriate for your level, we will send you a rejection email via HKU Portal or Moodle email. The email will specify which class best suits you and will copy the teacher of the new class. You will then need to register for the new class on SIS when the system is open and attend the new class according to the schedule. If you don’t receive any email via HKU portal/Moodle mail, or fail to register for the new course online on September 3rd, 2025, please contact the teacher of the new class for the venue and class schedule. If you wish to obtain approval, attendance on September 4th or 5th is mandatory. You must attend your registered class on one of these dates. Until this final step, your status will remain “pending.”
* Please note that:
(a) We will not be able to reply to any individual inquiry about your application result, the status of the application process, the reason for disapproval, or appeal for reconsideration after being disapproved.
(b) Applications will only be considered if steps (i) to (iii) are fully completed.
(c) In order to raise your enrollment priority, please DON’T register for CHIN9501 if you have prior knowledge of Chinese language (including Cantonese and any Chinese dialects).
(d) If you will not be in Hong Kong from August 29th to September 5th due to valid reasons, please contact the instructor of the class you have registered for online and submit the supporting documents via email before August 27th. Otherwise, your application will not be considered.
(e) Students who apply for Semester 1 courses are not guaranteed a seat if they complete the in-person written and oral tests after September 3rd, 2025 (Wednesday).
